Together with Border Patrol Agents, Marine and Air Interdiction Agents, and Agriculture Specialists, the entire CBP team works to secure the air and land borders of the United States.

The first challenge that must be met by CBP Officer applicants is passing the CBP Officer Entrance Examination. It is comprised of the Logical Reasoning Test; the Arithmetic Reasoning Test; and the Writing Skills Test. The minimum score that you need to obtain for this test is 70 points. Work hard and you can!!

To help you ace the CBP Officer Entrance Examination with flying colors, here are some tips to help you do just that:

1. Get a great study guide. You don’t have to spend a lot of money for this. The Preparation Manual for the CBP Officer Entrance Examination can be found on the CBP website (http://cbp.gov/xp/cgov/careers/study_guides/). This guide gives you not only tips but sample questions to help prepare you for the types of questions that will come out in the test. STUDY THIS and you can do great!!

2. Remember to answer all questions in the test. You will not be penalized for wrong answers unlike other exams where deductions are made against the right answers. Thus, it would be to your advantage to make educated guesses in questions where you are not sure of the answers. Eliminate the obvious wrong answers and make the best guess from the ones that are left.

3. Practice reading paragraphs that develop your critical thinking skills. You will be reading these kinds of paragraphs in the Logical Reasoning test. You will also find if-then sentences in the test and understanding the key connections between these words is essential to choosing the best answer.

4. To prepare for your arithmetic reasoning test, review the various mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers. There are also going to be problems about probability, work rate, averages, solving for unknown quantities, expressing word problems as equations, and calculating the area so make it a point to brush up on these.

5. For the writing skills test, make sure that you study the basic grammar rules. Review how to form correct sentences and differentiate these from phrases. Study verbs, infinitives, gerunds, participles, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Review prepositions, conjunctions, capitalization, and punctuations. Google definitions for any of these terms or ideas you don’t remember from high school.
