Opening with the ringing 'Harborcoat,' Reckoning runs through a set of ten jangle pop songs that are different not only in sound but in style from the debut. Where Murmur was enigmatic in its sound, Reckoning is clear, which doesn't necessarily mean that the songs themselves are straightforward. Michael Stipe continues to sing powerful melodies without enunciating, but the band has a propulsive kick that makes the music vital and alive.

Not that this album doesn’t get a lot of praise, but I think it’s not uncommon to see people gloss over Reckoning ever so slightly. seems to generally go something along the lines of this: they debuted with Murmur and became a pillar of the nascent American alternative scene in the process, then released Reckoning, a strong if inferior follow-up, before going on to get bigger and bigger before eventually breaking into the mainstream.

How ‘Reckoning’ Surpassed All Expectations For . looked to record the follow-up to ‘Murmur’, the bar set for their second album ‘Reckoning’ was already exceedingly high. Published on. October 10, 2017. Despite a relentless touring schedule, resting on their laurels was not an option for the band, who were keen to record their second album before the end of 1983. Indeed, in November, . had already recorded a batch of songs with Neil Young producer Eliot Mazer, who they briefly considered as the man to oversee the making of their second album. The quartet were less than enamoured with the end results, though, and instead chose to reconvene with Murmur producers Don Dixon and Mitch Easter.
Declaring Reckoning to be . s 'best' album sells short just how many different kinds of great albums . But, more so than any other . record, Reckoning is unified and energized by the very restlessness that has driven the band to explore so many different ideas and identities.
